| Author | Thread - North Sails IQ 5.8M |
| | Posted: 5.5.2005 at 02:53 | |
I'v been offered a NS IQ 5.8M. It's in immaculate condition and is going for silly money, I'm tempted to get it. I'm also thinking I might be wasting my money as its and old sail (circ 1997). It's not the latter 3D model. Does anyone have an IQ and how would the compair it to much newer sails like the Daytona or Crossride.
Cheers

I haven't actually had an IQ, but I have had North race sails from around that period (Prisma, IQ+3, IQ Race):
I had a Prisma 5.5 (95/96?) before I got the 5.8 IQ Race (99/00). I liked the Prisma a lot. It took me quite a while to get used to the new sail. The Prisma itself was a huge step forward from my previous sail (1990 Gamma, which was a non-monofilm Prisma).
Going from a 6.8 IQ+3 to a 6.8 Warp III was a big step. Camber rotation was rather bad for the first season or two on the Warp (quite smooth on the IQ+3), but on the other hand the Warp III takes gusts as if they were not there: its draft has never wandered and it has never slammed me.
If the IQ 5.8 going for "silly money", I think it's probably worth it. It will probably overpower a bit earlier than a truly modern sails, but it should offer good camber rotation and pretty good handling (all things considered).
Check the mast recommendations carefully though. It might be difficult to find a mast that fits really well.
I used a "purple curve" (combination curve) Fiberspar World Cup Race with the Prisma and I think it was a perfect fit. North had started to switch to constant curve at around that time.
I still have that mast and I have been tempted to try it on the IQ Race too just to see what happens (the IQ could use a little bit more twist higher up and a bit more power low down, so it might work pretty well even though the IQ Race is specced for a constant curve/drop shape mast)...

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to take a lokk at the sail next week. I'll take a mast along and see how it rigs.
Cheers Mark
